Starting or resuming a sport or exercise/workout routine can feel great—until muscle pain, aches, and inevitable bumps and bruises get you. Whether it’s your kids’ bumps and bruises from extra murals, or your sore muscles, with the occasional knocks at the gym, it’s all part of living and learning.
We’re breaking down the telltale signs of bumps, bruises, bangs and muscle fatigue, and share natural treatment solutions to help you and the kids bounce back faster!
Bruising (Ecchymosis)
- Cause & Signs: Bruising happens from an injury or blow, appearing as a mark that changes colour from blue to purple, then yellow-green, due to ruptured blood vessels.
- Symptoms: Pain, redness, swelling, and sensitivity appear quickly after the injury. The bruise darkens over time.
- Treatment: Apply a cold pack immediately to reduce blood flow and apply an anti-inflammatory/anti-bruising gel. Most normal bruises heal in 1-2 weeks.
Bump (Haematoma)
- Cause & Signs: A haematoma is a pocket of blood under the skin caused by vessel rupture from an injury, like a blow or punch. It appears as a swollen bluish-black mark, changing to green, brown, or yellow over time.
- Symptoms: Pain and swelling (oedema) at the point of impact, and discolouration of blue-black lesions (after the blow) and after a few days, a more green, brown or yellow colour.
- Treatment: Apply a cold pack and an anti-inflammatory/anti-bruising gel. Use oral pain medication relief if/when needed but avoid aspirin as it can worsen the bruise. Bumps usually recede in 4-5 days.
Bang (Contusion)
- Cause & Signs: Contusions happen from knocks, falls, kicks, blows or any direct impact on muscle mass, like bumping into something hard.
- Symptoms: Swelling and haematoma (blood pooling under the skin).
- Treatment: Stop physical activity, rest, apply compression, use pain relief, and apply an anti-inflammatory/anti-bruising gel.
Muscle Fatigue
- Cause & Signs: Intensive or infrequent exercise, sports, or repetitive and labour-intensive tasks can lead to muscle fatigue, where your muscles lose strength and struggle to perform everyday activities.
- Symptoms: Fatigued muscles may tremble, stiffen, or contract involuntarily.
- Treatment: Stop physical activity, rest, use pain relief, and massage with a soothing gel or cream.
